ariel problems.
#1
since i got the van i've always remembered the guy who sold me it saying the radio was a bit iffy with getting signal, i thought nothing of it as it was fine on the test drive and has been (for the most part) getting good signal ever since.

tonight i removed the oem radio/cd player to fit a digital radio, i found that the radio had been working without the ariel plugged into it, instead there was a wire pushed into the socket and the other end was taped to the radio, so i put the radio aside and continued to fit the DAB radio. once fitted i tried the fm radio and the signal is terrible, so the wire jammed into the back of the oem radio was obviously a quick fix for it.

so do i repeat the ghetto fix and ram a wire in the back to get fm signal back, or is there another way to fix it?

thanks.

Fit a new aerial. Not too expensive. A morning to do it if you take your time.

You could try one of these....

I need an aerial also ( using a C15 one at the minute ) and was pleased to see the above until I saw the price, my wife Vanessa won't wear spending that much so it will be a scrapyard foray for me ... Boo Hoo......

See, I look at it this way: £8 is not quite three pints of beer atm and the job will be made easier by having
new, clean stuff to put on. Going to a scrappy is fine if the aerial is on the counter complete with its cable and
working as it should. But you'll still have to spend at least a fiver. If you have to remove it from a donor vehicle yourself
(without damaging it) you'll probably take a couple of hours. Depends how much value you put on your time, really.

Hi Ol'Jeffers I'm all for what you say .... it is my wife who doesn't like spending .....

In mitigation .... I use an old fashioned scrappy and usually have a good old look around and come away with quite a few oddments in my pockets and portable tool box so I kind of like these visits.

I've got now to know the yard owner quite well and often have a cuppa whilst there too....

If I had to go to a " modern " scrapyard where the part is on the counter for you I doubt I'd bother going.

thanks for all the replies guys, just ordered the new ariel linked to by ol'jeffers, while im waiting for it to arrive i'll repeat the previous owners ghetto fix, but with a longer wire for better reception, i need to pull the radio out to run the cables for the dab ariel while im at it anyway.

will update with the ghetto fix results and then with the propper fix.

I reckon I'd be sending the wife down to the scrappy to get it then!!!

i've never got round to fixing it tbh, i tried the bit of wire as a temp fix but it never really helped. i've still got to run the wire for the digital radio too, so for now im just listening to cds.

but its the holidays now, so i might give it a go in the next few days.

has anyone got a how to guide to replacing the ariel?
