digital over analog have we gained by it ?

Hi to all, having being a commercial & plant fitter for over 25yrs and allways try to help my friends who do no have the knowledge to sort they're problems out, there is more and more ECU/BSI problems that are getting i have noticed very prominent lately, main diesel pumps being recoded and still not starting , i despair at the so-called mechanics of today that find if they have not got a fault code they are in the dark as what to do next, i wonder how far the motor industry will go with this CPU/BSI management before it's not fixable, oh for the days of analog dash readouts and mechanical fuel pumps things were so easy then, (rant over)....

My old fiesta, If it had a spark and fuel it would start. Modern cars have far too many sensors attached. Gone are the days of fixing a problem yourself.

And it's only going to get worse!

it was the same for the diesels, crack off a injector pipe spin the engine over if you got fuel delivery you got some more digging to do if you aint' got fuel there 99% of the time it was the pump, but nowadays you cannot even take the battery off with out going through the rigmaroll shutting down all of the engine management, ........a friend of mine who has run his own MOT garage for 30yrs, is selling up because of the way the trade is now repair wise, says it all dont it?.....

As far as I'm concerned,it's technology for technologys' sake.Cars are now being scrapped due to the inflated cost of electronic parts.In the (good?) old days,after steam but before electronics,you could buy used parts from a scrappy if you were brassic & off you would go 'till the next rusty bit fell off.:thumbsup::whistle:

That was the time fix it on the side of the road pull it a part put a part in new or second hand and away

i agree with you totally, there is too much 'IT' crap on cars and commercials nowadays ,like you said roadside repair are a thing of the past.........

As you say the price of electronic componants are over inflated i repair guitar amps as a hobby so know the price of IC's (chips), are in fact just pence pricewise but stick a few on a Pc board and that board is now in the hundreds of £s catagory just another ripoff of the industry........

They both have their place and virtues but the love affair with digital has gone too far in automotives.

The reason why 'boards' are in the hundreds is the Development costs, really.
Also, the chips used are often 'hardened' Versions which costs a bit more.
and finally, the higher than average 'rejection rate' of the finished modules during testing.

The good thing about ECUs is that they improve fuel economy and allows for 'tailoring' the setup to fit the type of vehicle the engine is going to be installed into.

Yes, the half a dozen extra sensors in modern cars can be a pain in the seating area when they fail...
On the other hand, most of those can be read out With Diagnostics Tools and allows us to see more of what actually happens inside the engines.

Win some, lose some...

If you want to see some really misplaced computers take a look in 'modern' tractors where they're even being used to Control the hydraulic lifters in the back...
My father's Belarus 420 (1975 or so vintage) has fully Automatic hydraulics with 'dept holding' just as good. It even lifts the plough and lowers it again if you hit a big rock. All that is done mechanically.
