There have been a number of posts concerning food like odors emanating from the heating system. Usually means that the heater matrix is leaking.

Probably not worth worrying about unless you hate the smell!

It usually only lasts a short while when you intitially use the heater.

Mine has done this for about 6 years and hasn't made any difference. the water needs half a cup top up every couple of months or so.

the smell is really really strong when i turn the heaters on, would stick to ur clothes its that bad, there is no leaks of any sort, is there anyways of cleaning the heater core or something on the lines of it. had on old civic before had same problem but was not half as bad as this. cleaning with anti bacterial spray wont help as its not in the vents, definatly comeing from the heater core.

try some radiator sealer . it might seal the leak enough to stop the smell, Failing that try an indian curry every night and then you'll never notice the smell.Wink:whistle:

Mr first car (a Mk3 Ford Escort) always seemed to have a curry smell when the heater was hot. It never lost coolant and I never did discover what caused the smell!

I remember my father's RWD Cavalier having exactly the same thing after the heater matrix was replaced. Never went away and didn't lose any water either, at least no significant water loss.

It only takes a little contamination to retain the smell. I normally scrub out the heater box with soapy water and hose well - but this is the sort of caper one can accommodate in a warm climate... Same reason I remove carpets and jet wash them; they sponge up a lot of dried coolant.
