Error code 9800
#1
Greetings from Chile!
I have a 2011 Berlingo which just turned 120,000k. As soon as it turned I got a check engine light. When I start it up I get an error code "9800".

Anyone know what that code is?

Hi, in Chile 2011 will likely be the old style M59.

It is an m59 with a 1.6 hdi . The error code appears momentarily after start up , followed by a bar which has min on the left and max on the right with 0s all across the top. It then converts back to kilometers. Could it be a timing chain warning? The engine runs fine, and I there are no carbon deposits or oil around the injector tubes. Also the service engine light remains on.

M59 it is, and by the way Addo, all of the Berlingos and Peugot Partners have a belly pan on them as stock equipment. At least that's one thing I didn't have to track down, but thanks again for your previous advice.

The "bar and zeroes" is your oil level check - if the level is detected low, you don't get a full spread of zeroes.

OK, found a garage with a scanner. I am note sure exactly what kind of sensor was bad, I know it had something to do with the injection system, and the egr valve is bad. I have a feeling that the initial 9800 code has something to do with a maintenance interval, but I haven't had time to translate the manual from spanish. Does anyone know of a download for m59 in english?

I think it may be the service countdown, unless it actually says "anti pollution fault" or something like that.

Your 1.4 may have air injection (three way catalyst, give or take) rather than true EGR. Any chance you can get pictures up, of the motor?

That was exactly my thought. Mine displays the km to service as soon as you turn the ignition on, then displays the oil level, then reverts to the mileometer/odometer. Nothing to worry about in my opinion.

Run the car for 50 miles and see if the displayed number changes.

I have a copy of the owners manual for a Partner in pdf format.

Thanks for the replies. It is in fact a service countdown, and I feel a bit foolish, but nothing in Chile is in any language other than spanish, and mine is not great. Still having recurring service engine light which I have cleared several times, and which keeps coming back. I will submit a new post with details.

I feel a bit foolish most days.
But seriously if you haven't seen the thing before and can't understand the manual then it's better to ask and put your mind at rest.
