Could be a leaking injector ?

Sounds like one cylinder is not picking up straight away.

If it was an old 1.9 I would say that it was a heater plug.

Do the 1.6s have heater plugs?

Red diesel is only dyed to show it is rebated fuel,ie tax free & illegal for road vehicles.I don't think it's inferior.

Sounds like a duff heater plug if it only happens when it is really cold. Red diesel will not be a problem as agricultural and boat diesel engines are similar to car engines. Outside chance that it it is dirty diesel.

ahh never thought about dirt could be that! was just worried because the engine management light used to come on and off frequently and this was cause by the egr being faulty apparently? but got the code cleared and it has never came on since
