Dodgy fuel gauge/sender unit?
#1
Hi,

I have a 2002 1.9 berlingo which runs out of fuel with a quarter of a tank still showing on the dash.

A mechanic friend suggests it could be either a fualty dash guage or sender unit, anyone have any idea's?

Tried a search but couldn't find much, is this a common fault on these?

Thanks in advance.

Are you getting poor fuel economy or is there a possible leak somewhere?

The gauge on the Berlingo is a bit odd in that it only reads the true fuel level when you put fuel in. In then calculates what is being used and deducts that from the guage.

In effect the ECU could be telling you what should be there, but if something is wrong, it's showing a false reading.

Hi,

There is no fuel leaks and economy seems to be about right for the driving I do.

When I first got the van (about 18 months ago) it would start to 'run out' just above the red on the gauge, it's gradually got worse and now it's just over a quater on the gauge.

I recently serviced it inc new fuel filter and all seems fine on the actual fueling side, just the apparenty 'dodgy' reading which is a little annoying lol.

Thinking about taking the tank off to check the sender unit, is there an easier way?

Cheers.

Gonna have to do this next week, ran out of juice yesterday without warning! Gauge was indicating well over 1/4 tank lol.

Quite lucky really, had just turned off a busy single carriage way (60mph) onto a quieter stretch of road (just of Abergele straights if anyone is familiar with N. Wales)!

Will let the forum know how I get on with the problem.
