Hi Guy's, since starting my new job I've been driving the wife's 2003 16v petrol Berlingo because the heater motor in my 1.9D has burnt out and I start early or finish late and need a heater. However back to the problem, I've noticed that sometimes you can turn the key and it won't turn over, everything else works and the battery and alternator where new when we got it a year ago, you just hear a clunk/click from down near the starter motor, if I keep trying it eventually turns over and starts as good as gold. I think the starter motor is on it's way out, any thoughts on the subject.

Sound's like starter motors on it's way out but as ron said check the other things first

I have replaced my starter twice on my 2004 1.6 petrol and those were the exact symptoms I had both times.
It gradually gets worse until it won't start at all.

This sounds like the old problem that used to affect lots of older Peugeot 205s and others. As wiring gets older it's electrical resistance becomes greater until sometimes there's not enough current to fully activate the starter solenoid.
The solution was always to bypass the long run of wiring to the ignition switch. Run a positive feed direct from battery +ve to the little terminal on the starter solenoid via a relay that is switched by the ignition feed from the starter switch.
In addition, do as Ron says while you're at it. It's all good news.
This means lots more oomph will activate the solenoid fully bridging the heavy duty starter contacts and starting the car. No more 'click' and nothing else!
Lots cheaper than a new starter too.

I had a problem similar to this on a Lada (yes I know). Turned out to be a fractured cable to the starter solenoid. The big cable carrying the motor current fractured inside the insulation near the solenoid. Took me bloody ages to find it.

We finally gave in and took Betty to the garage we use and they confirmed that the Starter motor was buggered and fitted a new one. While she was there they changed all the filters along with the oil and plugs. I would have done it myself but I've got the week off to get a lot of work done on our allotment, apart from that it's the wife's car so she paid.
