If the petrol engine is the same setup as the diesel one with the hole for locking the flywheel in the same place I found it as easy to remove the starter motor bolts and twist the motor to the side. It makes it easy to slip the 6mm bolt/pin in without the special tool.
The best way is to lock the flywheel is with the pins rather than try and lock it another way without using the pins.
just seen tomcats post , that's a better solution.

Where is the hole for the 6mm pin ? On a 1.9d the hole is behind the starter motor - option - either buy a posh bendy tool or remove the starter. I remove the starter ( 10 mins tops including finding the tools ) and use a 6mm drill ( shank end and NOT the fluted end ). I find removing the starter is good since it allows you to clean the business end which helps to keep it spinning at full speed.
Maybe the same applies to your 1.6 which will save a few bob.
Quick edit : Too slow typing .. see above post

Thank you for the replies, i'll double check positioning of starter motor in relevance to the pin hole. As you said Geoff, good opportunity to clean the starter motor whilst it is off.
Tomcat, thanks for the link, I think I will buy a 1m length of this rod as well.
I'll be doing this next week, as i'm working this weekend. I'll try and take pictures and post something of relevance on here for future reference for people wanting to tackle the job.
That's if it all goes to plan

The 1.6 petrol, has marks on the cam belt that correspond to those on the pulleys. You can do this job without locking the crankshaft.
