Clutch release bearing
#1
Over the last week or so I've noticed that the clutch release bearing is rather noisy. When the van is at idle it rattles, and when you press the clutch pedal it stops, as you would expect. The van has only done 29k and Citroen say they can't find an issue, they also refuse to replace it under warranty because the clutch is not covered. Surely the clutch release bearing should last a lot longer than this? A friend of mine works for Rygor (Mercedes Commercial) and he says he replaces clutch release bearings and dual mass flywheels under warranty, on vans with 100k on them!

First thing you need to do is take a look at your warranty and see if it defo does not cover clutches, don't take them at their word!

I've always found an email to Citroen UK from their website helps on this. Premature failure due to fault rather than just wear is covered. Try a nice but firm email first & if this does not bring results, start mentioning things like 'sale of goods act' & fit for purpose' etc. A dealer will always try to fob you off with something like this because they won't get paid for warranty work unless authorised by Citroen UK. Provided Citroen UK ok a stripdown then they will do it.

I don't think that quoting "fit for purpose" & sales of goods act is a good way forward on a van that has done 29000 miles. This is a fair mileage for any component, and it would be easy for Citroen to blame your driving as the issue. A good will gesture would be about the best you could hope for in my view.

It worked reasonably well when my egr valve failed, 6mtns after warranty expired at about 35k miles When I say failed, a component broke off inside causing egr valve to stay open. Cost of repair at Citroen garage was £540 & Citroen UK refunded just over £300 worth of parts cost as 'goodwill'. so I actually paid the £230 labour cost which I though was reasonable as car was out of warranty. This was after an exchange of half a dozen emails & eventually 'fit for purpose' etc was mentioned. This worked within warranty as well when dealer refused to replace split gear lever boot & sliding door rails with black paint peeling off as they were 'cosmetic' & Citroen UK ok'ed replacements.

Obviously clutch components can fail prematurely due to driver abuse. Op will know the truth of this & if he believes component has failed due to manufacturing fault then it should be done under warranty.

Well I got the van back, Citroen said the noise is normal. I'll just see how it goes.. On the upside, I got to drive about in a 208 all day! Funky little thing, but it does love to understeer..
