Vehicle Specific Towbar Wiring
#1
Having bought a used Witter detatchable swan neck towbar from a nice gentleman who advertised it on this forum, I have now started looking for a vehicle specific towbar wiring so that I don't invalidate my warranty.

I've looked at 3rd party solutions from various companies, and prices range from about £130 for 7 pin to £200+ for 13 pin and are supply only, fitting is extra

I then looked at genuine Citroen wiring kits to compare

Citroen do three wiring kits for the Mk3 Berlingo

7 pin - part number 1606489280
7+7 pin - part number 1607814280
13 pin - part number 1607814080

I previously asked my local Citroen dealer for the price of the 13 pin kit and was pleasantly surprised that it was at least on par in cost with a 3rd party kit at £197.83 including VAT, so I'm assuming that the 7 pin kit will be cheaper still
When I'm next in my local dealer, I'll ask about the prices of the other two kits and update this thread
On further investigation on the Citroen UK website, I found that the 7+7 pin kit can be supplied and fitted for £323 including VAT

While doing random Google searches on the Citroen part numbers, I came across the genuine Citroen fitting instructions for these kit, so I thought I would share them in case anybody like me is looking for information about the genuine Citroen wiring kits

From the pdf's below, you will see that the kits come with all the necessary bits and bobs including nuts, screws, fuses, cable ties and the exact wiring to plug and play

7 pin
13 pin and 7+7 pin

The only thing that is left to do once fitted is to activate it all using a Lexia/Diagbox

I have looked at this and it is pretty straight forward as there is a simple 'Activate Towbar Wiring' section

When I next plug the Lexia in to my Berlingo, I will take some screenshots for everybody to see

Hope someone finds this information useful

UPDATE
After searching more on the Citroen wiring kits, the prices seem to be cheaper if you order them online from Europe
I have found a Citroen dealer in Agen in France that will supply the 13 pin kit for £123.42 and the 7 pin for £115.94, plus £12.76 postage

Also, according to the HM Revenues and Customs web site, there is no extra Customs Duty or Import VAT to pay from an EU state
Quote:If you're ordering or sending purchased goods (other than alcohol and tobacco) to the UK from another EU country then it's just like shopping in the UK:
there is no Customs Duty payable
there is no import VAT payable

Things are getting better and better, already a saving of about £60 - think I'll keep digging to see if I can find a better price

Can someone do me favour and take a look at this to see if my assumptions are correct

Looking at this PDF about the 13 pin and 7+7 pin wiring, would you assume that picture 6 is saying......

"If you have got these three plugs already behind the panel in the back of the car, skip to step 27 because you already have the wiring in place coming from the front and do not need to fit the extra cable mentioned in pictures 7 to 26."

I have these three plugs already in the back (green, red and orange), so I hope my assumptions are correct

After scrutinising the PDF, I would concur that the next step is 27 if those three connectors are present. However, there may be a twist in that those three connectors may relate to image 27 as they might only be for connecting the indicator buzzer unit to?

Also, the two number 6 images look like they are from two slightly different variant of car, looking at the plastic trim. If that is the case, then you are on the lucky side as this would indicate that you have part of the required loom in place.

It's a lot of hassle if you don't order the complete kit to find that you did need the loom you refer to, but Is it less hassle to order it later than be stuck with a loom you don't need?

Crisis and dilemma stage me thinks

I personally would go down the same route as you and omit ordering that part of the loom Smile
0 to 60 - be patient, 0 to 100 - not in my lifetime!
It may be a slow Blue Slug, but it"s the only slow Blue Slug that I own :S

Glad someone had the same assumptions as me

As far as I know, the section of the loom going to the front is included in the kit

The 7 pin kit doesn't come with the front to back loom only the 13/7+7 pin kit does

The only difference between the two kits is connector M, which I assume is for the extra cabling for the 13/7+7 kit to the trailer socket

I've had the glove compartment out today to look for the connections mentioned in 7 to 26 and they do appear to be there, but the pictures are for a left hand drive, so there was a lot of head scratching to try to identify the correct connectors as the pictures looked nothing like my car.
The only thing that isn't the same is that connector O in picture 18 has not been plugged in to the fuse board, but both of the other connectors (Z and Q) are already connected
Connector O is loose among the jumble of wires going to the fuse board - hopefully it just needs plugging in

Well took the plunge and have ordered the 13 pin kit from a Citroen Dealer in France for £123.42 plus £12.76 postage - that's £60 difference than buying it in the UK

Hope I haven't just made a big mistake

If anybody is interested here is the web site

It's in French, so had to use Google Translate for a lot of it

As soon as it arrives, I'll report back

The picture looks the same, but that does not mean it's a genuine Citroen part

Make sure it is this part number 1607814080 to make sure you get the correct one

Many non-genuine specific vehicle towbar wiring still needs quite a bit of scotchlocking and cutting of the loom as I found out recently

The one I've ordered from a genuine Citroen dealer in France is 140.25 Euros incl VAT plus delivery

I've never been a fan of ebay when it comes to genuine parts because you never know what you are going to get until it turns up and if it's not genuine, you have all the hassle of returning it, probably at your own cost

Choice is yours realy

Big Grin
Well the kit arrived today from France and took only 4 days

It is the genuine wiring kit as you can see from the label - part number 1607814080

The kit comes with two looms

1. Front to Rear loom from BSI to towbar connection fusebox - this isn't needed on my 2010 XTR as it is already part of the original loom - it has 3 connectors on both ends

Rear Connectors

Front Connectors
[Image: 2hxrdch.jpg]

2. 2nd Loom - Cable from towbar connection fuse box to trailer 13 pin lighting socket

It has 3 connectors, 2 earths and a fuse
[Image: 2jc6bt2.jpg]

Then there is the connection fusebox and bracket

13 pin plug
[Image: 29fwcj.jpg]

And finally a bag of bits and pieces - mine was missing a plastic grommet and a spring washer
[Image: 2qbt30k.jpg]

When I get a chance over the next few days, I'll fit it and take some pictures and write a detailed installation guide along with the activation using Lexia/Diagbox

I suppose that's all I need now is a trailer to plug in to it

It appears the current standard is 13 pin, because all caravans since 1st September 2008 have to have the 13 pin fitted when built
Also a lot of newer lighting bars are now coming with the 13 pin

This does not mean that you have to have the 13 pin as there are adapters available to convert between the different types

So in the end, the choice is yours

e.g.
13 to 7N pin

7N+7S to 13

13 to 7N+7S

Wiring kit is now fitted and working well when connected to a 12N trailer board (I also bought a 13 to 7N adapter)

Fitting was no problem and the activation via Lexia was also easy

The only thing I question is that the colouring of the 13 cable is different to all the 13 pin wiring diagrams I've found on the interweb

Also, the diagram that came with the kit states to attach to one of the cables to pin 12, leaving pin 11 as a spare, but all diagrams I've found say to connect pin 11 and leave 12 as the spare
So got a bit confused by that one so wired it to a in the standard way with the connection to pin 11 with 12 as the spare

Suppose I'll have to find a new caravan to plug in to to test if that 11 and 12 pin arrangement is correct
