Try if you can to raise the back end by the sill jacking points etc so that both the arms drop fully down. Also look for dust seal damage around the pivot points of the arms. I had a "cracking" noise when the pivot bearings were shot.

check the anti-roll bar and tortion bars, the bearing in the axle tube breaks down causing knocking when driving on uneaven surfaces. have had this problem is two successive berlingos. just had to add a new rear axle to my 06 plate because of it.

Thanks for all the input lads. Knowing my luck its going to be something expensive and I would say its going to be that bearing or something up with the torsion bars. Anything else would be too easy a cop-out for the way my life is going! If it is the bearing then there is a truck specialist in town who can press a new one in for me, he did the same job on my mate's Pug. Not many people have the kit to be able to do that job. Ta everyone.

Just an update, the noise seems to have disappeared in this wet weather. I can only presume that it was something to do with the shox? Who knows?
