clutch or gear box problem advise please

I noticed tonight that when car is idling I'm getting a low grinding noise that stops when the clutch is put in. I'm wondering could this be the release bearing cars only done around 40 thousand miles and if it is the bearing do wait for it to break? The noise is so low atm I'm worried garage will think I'm nuts and claim they can't hear it

Plus does anyone know what sort of money were talking cause the last time I.fitted a clutch to my old car it cost 800 quid

The symptoms you describe are those of a noisy gearbox input shaft bearing.This can be caused by a too low idle speed.Have you change the g/box oil? If not synthetic is what I would recommend.alut:alut:

Plus don't let it get to the point where it breaks it will only cost you more in the long run.

If what Ron recommends doesnt work then get a few quotes to replace the bearing.

Nope I haven't changed anything. I will speak to garage about getting the oil changed then. what would cause it to idle too low?
the noise goes away the minute you put the clutch in then comes back the minute clutch is raised when idling

the cars warranty ended in march, I did but a 2 year auto care plan for AC when I bought the car but im not sure they would cover this and if there mechanics are actually any good or if id be better using my normal mechanic

Does the idle speed appear low? Modern cars don't have the good old fashioned adjustment screws.If the idle is low,a dose of fuel cleaner MAY bring it up.alut:

It's idling just under 1000 rpm as normal and exactly mileage is 040354 this noise seems to appear anytime you return to nuteral and stops when clutch is put in noise is still fairly quite but is there

Change the gearbox oil.

If no better get the input shaft bearing changed.

Sods law the warranty ran out in march, a polite email to Citroen saying the bearing has failed and should last longer than 40,000 miles might get Citroen to change it.

Just a quick update

Took my car down to the garage that I usually use and they have agreed that it is either the release bearing on the clutch or the input shaft and they recon to wait until it starts making the noise in under load before brining it in to be fix. which shouldn't be anytime soon

Now as I have an auto care warranty with Arnold Clark I have rang them to ask them about repairs and they have said they cant tell me if the input shaft is covered until they can remove the gear box and see the parts. is this genuine or is this some kind of stunt to lure me in and then say the warranty doesn't cover it after dropping my gear box out for a nice labour charge

Is the clutch heavier than before? This happens when the input shaft bearing approaches end stage failure.
