Hello

Hi, I'm a Berlingo fan and have a 2005 1.9 diesel berlingo desire . I am soon to update to a newer model and was looking for other peoples opinion on which model is best for me so hoping the forum will help.

Hi jjb and welcome. If you are sticking with the MK2 model, 'upgrading' to the 1.6 HDI engine will be a nice step up.

Hi Andre, The thing is I tow a small caravan (850kg).The 1.9 I've got manages ok but I'm not sure if the 1.6, 90bhp will be adequate. Would I need to go for the 1.6 110bhp ? They seem to be hard to find and pricey!! If the 90bhp did the job I would go for that. Have you done any towing with yours ?

Towed a caravan with mine (2.0HDI 90BHP) and no problems. Don't expect grand-prix starts and racing performance but will be a marked improvement over 1.9 engine.

I would imagine the 2.0HDI would be better but that's not available in the later model only the 1.6 so it's whether the 90bhp would be as good with the smaller engine. The 1.9 is sluggish with the caravan on but we don't travel very far so it's ok for what we want.

Yes, we know all about the 2.0HDI being superceeded after 2005, the 1.6HDI has the same power output i.e. 90BHP but from a smaller cubic capacity engine (1600c.c.) which is supposedly a more efficient unit and will be more than adequate for the job...

The 1.6 turbo-diesel is a cracking engine! If you're worried about power it can be chipped to around 128bhp and that improves the economy too.
The same motor is fitted to the Ford Focus and the Mini to name a couple,
but if you keep the oil fresh and change it every 9000 miles then you shouldn't get a problem.
I have one in my '06 Desire and it's great.

Thanks for your feedback.I'll be going to have a look at a 58 reg 1.6 hdi 90 tomorrow so might throw a new thread on to see if anyone has experience of towing with this model.I'd go for a more usual towcar but hey- it just wouldn't be a berlingo !
